Review of my time as a volunteer at Amigo Fiel by vet nurse student; Maia Lervad
I’m 25-years old and training to be at vet nurse in Denmark. As a part of my study, I spent two and a half weeks working at Amigo Fiel in Bombarral, Portugal.
My experience working as a volunteer at Amigo Fiel, was just great. The first days I was very overwhelmed by all the dogs barking, all calling for attention. I was overwhelmed of all the expressions that I had to process every day. At first, I didn’t know anyone either dogs or the volunteer staff, who work there every day. I was very happy about being introduced to the sweet and very patient volunteer, Susan, who was taking care of me and made the plan for me. She had scheduled tasks for each day and was following up on me all the time – it was nice to get all the support and help as needed. Susan was brilliant (big thanks to her)!
After a quick tour around, my first job was to walk some dogs and I slowly got introduced to all the different dogs. All the dogs are fantastic; they all have different personalities and have such great characters. Some were very frightened, and some were just happy and greeting to meet me. In my first days working and walking the dogs, they were all like the same to me; they were dogs I didn’t know and was very aware of all my movements and watched me carefully. I felt like they needed to wait and look at me, before casting all their kind doglove after me. After only one week, I started to feel like I knew all the dogs – some more than others. That made me realize, that all the volunteers like Susan, that come by every day of their life to work hard for the dogs and keeping the shelters running, because of all the love from the dogs. It’s obvious that you’re doing a good thing, when you see the reaction and the growth of all the different dogs each day. I only spent a short time at Amigo Fiel, and I really got the feeling that the new dogs there developed into more kind and trusting dogs.
Most of the dogs at Amigo Fiel are found on the streets, dumped by their previous owner, or just born in the streets; never known what it’s like to have a home with a loving and caring family. Always starving, always running from bad people, who want them gone, throwing stones at the poor dogs. They never had a reason to trust a human. Every day at Amigo Fiel, volunteers work with the dogs to outwork the mistrust and fear. To overview and be a part of the daily work with the dogs at Amigo Fiel was amazing. The dogs took form in front of my eyes each day and I started to notice all their differences and I really started to care for many of them – fully understanding the volunteers; always coming back to the shelters, despite of all the poop, pee, mud, and dirt, despite all the damaged aggressive dogs, despite of the stressful and hard work.
I really want to mention how I expected things would be like before I came to Amigo Fiel. I expected the dogs to be in a bad condition, being sick or dirty. I definitely didn’t expect to experience that the dogs were vaccinated properly and getting their flea treatments and dewormings regularly. I wasn’t expecting the dogs to get in such a good condition so fast here.
I later learned that the dogs get all they need to be healthy very fast. Amigo Fiel has a volunteer groomer, washing and cutting, treating the skin and fur as needed. They also have a vet attached, coming to the shelter every now and then; by the time I was there, the kind vet Dr. Joshua appeared there to check, vaccinate, and treat the dogs every Thursday.
Also, they have permanent cleaning staff, who have a salary and clean the whole place every single morning, keeping the place hygienic. What they have and all the things they get done is fantastic, with such little resources. That was the biggest surprise for me – and I was very happy to learn, that all the dogs get the care and treatments that they need.
The only thing they don’t get and what they really need badly, is the feeling of being a part of a family and get attention as a family pet. The volunteers at Amigo Fiel work hard and do all their best to be there for all the dogs, to hand out the love and attention to all of them – but there is just not enough people or hours to give all the dogs the needed attention every day.
If it was possible to give attention for more than fifteen or twenty-five minutes for each dog each day, it wouldn’t be as easy to overlook illness or for the dogs to hide pain, if they are hurt in some way.
Even though Amigo Fiel does a great job taking care of all the dogs and gives them all the love they contain in their bodies – it’s just not good enough for the poor dogs, who just need a family to take care of them.
For me it was an adventure to get to know all the sweet dogs and the amazing team behind Amigo Fiel. Everyone filled up an important job for the place to run that well. Susan, who supervised me through the entire stay, was just great! She had this amazing overview of all the dogs and all the tasks at the shelters. She has a long list with dog names, which is her overview of who to do next; who are getting dewormers, going to the vet, who needs surgery, who needs flea treatment, etc.
Anneke is taking care of all the training and socializing with the dogs and is making sure the dogs get the right training so that someday they’ll be ready to adjust to a family as their pet. She walks the dogs and take care of the troubled dogs, who needs extra attention – she really does have an important role at Amigo Fiel.
Paula, Isa, Susana and the other cleaning-staff are working hard as a cool “dream clean team”. They clean both the shelters and keep the place nice and hygienic. They taught me how to clean properly and did not get scared to get a little dirty while working at the shelter.
And as the last but not least person, the chief of them all; Filipa. The president of Amigo Fiel, doing all the difficult and most “hair pulling” work of them all. She is dealing with the government and all the time trying to get more support from the local authority in Bombarral.
She works day and night for the animal rights and is available at all hours to move out, if dogs and cats are in need of help. And right when I went to Amigo Fiel, she said that she had won a champion with the local authority; and that they now are able to give Amigo Fiel a little raise at their fundings!
Huge work paid out. And with more attention to this dog rescue centre, the better. The more volunteers from all over the world that join Amigo Fiel to help, the more it builds up and draw attention to the authority – to show the importance of their existence. Furthermore, the more donations the bigger Amigo Fiel will grow, and the more dogs can get rescued and the faster this situation of abandoned street dogs will vanish.
So big thanks to all the volunteers that works hard every day, to help rescuing all the poor dogs and cats – they really do a great job, both the ones I have mentioned above, and all the others that I didn’t. They all make a huge difference for so many dogs.
It’s hard to really explain what kind of effort this place does for the dogs – it’s something that needs to be experienced by your own body. You gotta try out on your own body to connect with all of the sweet souls of all the dogs, to understand why so many people put in all this hard work and long hours to make the life for our four-legged friends, just a little pinch better.
I highly recommend this place and this amazing team behind Amigo Fiel.

Tenho 25 anos de idade e estou a treinar para ser enfermeiro veterinário na Dinamarca. Como parte do meu estudo, passei duas semanas e meia a trabalhar no Amigo Fiel em Bombarral, Portugal.
A minha experiência a trabalhar como voluntário no Amigo Fiel foi simplesmente fantástica. Nos primeiros dias, fiquei muito impressionado com todos os cães a ladrar, todos a chamar a atenção. Fiquei impressionado com todas as expressões que tinha de processar todos os dias. No início, não conhecia ninguém, nem os cães, nem o pessoal voluntário, que lá trabalhava todos os dias. Fiquei muito feliz por ter sido apresentada à doce e muito paciente voluntária, Susan, que tomava conta de mim e fazia o plano para mim. Ela tinha tarefas programadas para cada dia e estava sempre a acompanhar-me – era bom receber todo o apoio e ajuda, conforme necessário. Susan era brilhante (muito obrigada a ela)!
Após uma rápida digressão, o meu primeiro trabalho foi passear alguns cães e lentamente fui sendo apresentada a todos os diferentes cães. Todos os cães são fantásticos; todos eles têm personalidades diferentes e têm personagens tão fantásticas. Alguns estavam muito assustados, e outros estavam apenas felizes e saudosos por me conhecerem. Nos meus primeiros dias a trabalhar e passear os cães, eles eram todos iguais para mim; eram cães que eu não conhecia e estava muito atento a todos os meus movimentos e observava-me cuidadosamente. Senti que eles precisavam de esperar e olhar para mim, antes de lançarem todo o seu amável amor de cão atrás de mim. Após apenas uma semana, comecei a sentir que conhecia todos os cães – uns mais do que outros. Isso fez-me perceber, que todos os voluntários como Susan, que aparecem todos os dias da sua vida para trabalhar arduamente pelos cães e manter os abrigos a funcionar, por causa de todo o amor dos cães. É óbvio que se está a fazer uma coisa boa, quando se vê a reacção e o crescimento de todos os diferentes cães a cada dia. Só passei pouco tempo no Amigo Fiel, e tive realmente a sensação de que os novos cães de lá evoluíram para cães mais amáveis e confiantes.
A maioria dos cães no Amigo Fiel são encontrados nas ruas, abandonados pelo seu dono anterior, ou apenas nascidos nas ruas; nunca soube o que é ter um lar com uma família carinhosa e carinhosa. Sempre esfomeados, sempre a fugir de pessoas más, que os querem fora, a atirar pedras aos pobres cães. Nunca tiveram uma razão para confiar num humano. Todos os dias no Amigo Fiel, os voluntários trabalham com os cães para superar a desconfiança e o medo. Fazer parte do trabalho diário com os cães no Amigo Fiel foi espantoso. Os cães tomaram forma diante dos meus olhos todos os dias e comecei a notar todas as suas diferenças e comecei realmente a cuidar de muitos deles – compreendendo totalmente os voluntários; voltando sempre aos abrigos, apesar de todo o cocó, chichi, lama e sujidade, apesar de todos os cães agressivos danificados, apesar do trabalho stressante e árduo.
Quero realmente mencionar como eu esperava que as coisas fossem antes de vir para Amigo Fiel. Esperava que os cães estivessem em mau estado, doentes ou sujos. Definitivamente não esperava que os cães fossem devidamente vacinados e que recebessem regularmente os seus tratamentos contra as pulgas e desparasitações. Não esperava que os cães estivessem em tão boas condições tão rapidamente aqui. Mais tarde aprendi que os cães conseguem tudo o que precisam para serem saudáveis muito rapidamente. Amigo Fiel tem um tratador voluntário, lavando e cortando, tratando a pele e o pêlo conforme necessário. Eles também têm um veterinário ligado, vindo de vez em quando ao abrigo; quando lá estive, o gentil veterinário Dr. Joshua apareceu lá para verificar, vacinar, e tratar os cães todas as quintas-feiras. Além disso, têm pessoal de limpeza permanente, que tem um salário e limpam o local todo todas as manhãs, mantendo o local higiénico. O que eles têm e tudo o que fazem é fantástico, com tão poucos recursos. Essa foi a maior surpresa para mim – e fiquei muito feliz por saber, que todos os cães recebem os cuidados e tratamentos que precisam. A única coisa que eles não têm e do que realmente precisam é a sensação de fazerem parte de uma família e receberem atenção como animais de estimação da família. Os voluntários do Amigo Fiel trabalham arduamente e dão o seu melhor para estarem presentes para todos os cães, para distribuir o amor e atenção a todos eles – mas não há pessoas ou horas suficientes para dar a todos os cães a atenção necessária todos os dias. Se fosse possível dar atenção durante mais de quinze ou vinte e cinco minutos para cada cão por dia, não seria tão fácil negligenciar a doença ou os cães esconderem a dor, se de alguma forma estiverem feridos.
Mesmo que Amigo Fiel faça um trabalho infernal cuidando de todos os cães e lhes dê todo o amor que eles contêm nos seus corpos – só não é suficientemente bom para os pobres cães, que só precisam de uma família para cuidar deles.
Para mim foi uma aventura conhecer todos os cães doces e a incrível equipa por detrás de Amigo Fiel. Todos preencheram um trabalho importante para que o lugar funcionasse tão bem. A Susan, que me supervisionou durante toda a estadia, foi simplesmente fantástica! Ela tinha esta incrível visão geral de todos os cães e de todas as tarefas nos abrigos. Ela tem uma longa lista com nomes de cães, que é a sua visão geral de quem fazer a seguir; quem está a receber vermífugos, quem vai ao veterinário, quem precisa de cirurgia, quem precisa de tratamento de pulgas, etc.
Anneke está a cuidar de todo o treino e socialização com os cães e está a certificar-se de que os cães recebem o treino certo para que um dia estejam prontos para se adaptarem a uma família como seu animal de estimação. Ela passeia os cães e toma conta dos cães problemáticos, que precisam de atenção extra – ela tem realmente um papel importante no Amigo Fiel.
Paula, Isa, Susana e a outra equipa de limpeza estão a trabalhar arduamente como uma “equipa limpa de sonho”. Limpam os dois abrigos e mantêm o local agradável e higiénico. Ensinaram-me a limpar correctamente e não tiveram medo de se sujar um pouco enquanto trabalhavam no abrigo.
E como a última mas não menos importante pessoa, a chefe de todos eles; Filipa. A presidente de Amigo Fiel, fazendo todo o trabalho difícil e mais “puxar o cabelo” de todos eles. Ela está a lidar com o governo e está sempre a tentar obter mais apoio da autoridade local em Bombarral. Ela trabalha dia e noite para os direitos dos animais e está disponível a qualquer hora para se deslocar, se cães e gatos precisarem de ajuda. E logo quando fui a Amigo Fiel, ela disse que tinha ganho um campeão com a autoridade local; e que eles agora podem dar a Amigo Fiel um pequeno aumento nos seus fundos! Um trabalho enorme pago. E com mais atenção a este centro de resgate de cães, quanto melhor. Quanto mais voluntários de todo o mundo se juntarem ao Amigo Fiel para ajudar, mais ele se acumula e chama a atenção para a autoridade – para mostrar a importância da sua existência. Além disso, quanto mais doações, maior o Amigo Fiel crescerá, e mais cães poderão ser resgatados e mais rapidamente esta situação de cães de rua abandonados desaparecerá.
Um grande obrigado a todos os voluntários que trabalham arduamente todos os dias, para ajudar a salvar todos os pobres cães e gatos – eles fazem realmente um grande trabalho, tanto os que mencionei acima, como todos os outros que eu não fiz. Todos eles fazem uma enorme diferença para tantas vidas caninas.
É difícil explicar realmente que tipo de esforço este lugar faz pelos cães – é algo que precisa de ser experimentado pelo seu próprio corpo. Temos de experimentar o nosso próprio corpo para nos ligarmos a todas as almas doces de todos os cães, para compreendermos porque é que tantas pessoas põem todo este trabalho árduo e longas horas para tornar a vida dos nossos amigos de quatro patas, apenas uma pequena pitada melhor.
Recomendo vivamente este lugar e esta espantosa equipa por detrás de Amigo Fiel.
